The Different Types of ADUs You Can Build

Every property has unique potential. If you want to maximize space, usability and value, then it is important that you choose the right ADU type for your property. As experienced ADU construction contractors, we help you build a wide range of Accessory Dwelling Units, which are customized to meet local zoning regulations and your specific needs.

  • Detached ADUs: This is a fully independent unit that gives you the maximum privacy and flexibility. You can build these standalone structures to serve as rental properties, guest houses, or home offices. They feature separate utilities and custom floor plans.
  • Attached ADUs: As the name suggests, this type of ADUs integrated with the main home. They help you expand living space and still provide you with direct access to the primary residence. This option is ideal for multi-generational living or if you want to get rental income without giving up backyard space.
  • Above-Garage ADUs: They are built above an existing or newly constructed garage, these ADUs help you optimize underutilized space. They help you to maintain the yard and also adds a sufficient living area. However, it is important to note that above-garage units require precise structural engineering to make the structure safe and stable.
  • Interior ADUs: You can also convert your basement, or unused portion of the home into a livable unit. These conversions require careful planning to meet ventilation, insulation, and egress requirements to ensure a better living experience.
